Boeseman's Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia lacustris)

Found in Lake Kutubu and its outlet in Papua, this vibrant freshwater fish thrives in groups of 6-8 or more, which helps them feel secure and display their best colors. Though peaceful, their rapid movements can unsettle smaller or slower tankmates. Ideal companions include similarly sized rainbowfish, characins, and catfish. They prefer water with a pH of 7.0-8.8 and temperatures of 68-76°F. In the wild, they are omnivores, so a varied diet of high-quality flake, frozen, and live foods is essential in aquariums.
