- Roundtail bettas have a single tail with round edges and are sometimes referred to as fan tail betta.
- Depending on where you buy them, you may see them listed as Single Tail (ST) instead of Round Tail.
- Some people mistake them for delta betta fish because their tails are similar, however the delta betta has a straighter edge than the roundtail. They are also mistaken for halfmoon bettas (HM), however the HM’s tail will have a “D” shape instead. See below for the differences:
- Roundtails generally have a lifespan of about 2 or 3 years. Due to their relatively short lifespan, it is best to get roundtails when they are babies. Baby roundtails will eat their yolk sacs during the first few days of their life. You can then feed them mircoworms, baby brine shrimp or liquid fry food such as Infusoria. As they get older they can eat bigger foods. Adult roundtail bettas eat live brine shrimp, flakes and pellets. Pellets are recommended instead of flakes as they make the water less dirty and it is easier to tell how much food your betta fish are eating with pellets.
- To house your round tail betta fish you need a fish tank of adequate size. The tank should be at least 2.5 gallons but when it comes to tank size, bigger is better. Smaller tanks allow ammonia to build up if the water is not changed regularly and this can be fatal to your betta fish. Horizontal tanks are better than vertical ones. You will also need a cover or lid for your tank as round tails can jump as high as ½ foot into the air! (Haven’t seen this myself, just stating what I’ve heard.) Obviously if they jump out of the tank they can meet serious harm, so a tank cover is definitely recommended.
